About Project M
Project M is our project to automate a home to allow an elderly and disabled person to continute to live independently in the house without full time live-in care. In addition to these aims, Project M will include the use of technology to improve energy efficiency and to demonstrate the use of other 21c technologies.
Project M is an ongoing project and will continue to evolve as we introduce new technologies and solutions into the home.
To start with, project M has implemented a network of web enabled cameras to allow family members to remotely monitor activity within the house and check on the wellbeing of the occupant. Also some mobility aids have been implemented. See the links from this page to find more details about these steps.
Some of the longer term aims and ideas are:
Implement live voice connection using Skype so that family members from homes all over the world can chat without calling, effectively creating one large virtual house.
Test out the use of robot appliances, such as lawnmowers to reduce the reliance on outside contractors.
Create a data centre with vpn connectivity so that distributed family homes are all linked on the same data network to enable the easy sharing of photos and documents.
